The activities desk staff is there to assist you in any way. Whether it be diving, snorkeling, whale watching, ocean kayaking, hiking, mountain biking, horse back riding, or just limin' on the beach... you will never run out of adventure in Dominica!! And the friendly staff at Castaways is there to help you in your planning...there to help you in any way possible.
Watersports Activities
Ocean Kayaks are available for rent from dive Castaways. Enjoy a cruise up and down the coast of Dominica. Take snorkeling gear along with you and check out your own, private snorkeling sports along the lee shore.
The "sit on top" design kayaks make it easy to use the kayaks to access these nice spots and private beaches along the way. Pull the kayak up on the shore and go take dip in a fresh water river to cool off and wash the salt from the skin.
A sunfish is available for short sailing excursions from the hotel. Lessons are available. The lee shore can make for some shifty winds, but that is half of the fun.
Boats with captain are available to charter. If one wants to take the family for a cruise up or down the coast (to a quaint seaside restaurant perhaps), or if a couple wants to do a romantic sunset cruise, it can all be easily arranged.
Whale Watching
Dominica is quickly becoming known as one of the two or three "hot spots" in the world for watching sperm whales (Moby Dick!!). Some of the sperm whales use the waters off Dominica as a year-round haven. The large, mature males, being the largest of the toothed whales and weighing up to 40 tons, migrate back to these waters during the late fall, winter and early spring months to meet the females and young males. It is during these months when we see the most 'socializing' amongst the animals. It is a site to behold. Incredibly large animals (30 - 50 feet in length), vocalizing, hanging in vertical positions, writhing their bodies together, in what appears to be an act of foreplay.
Then suddenly their behavior will change and the group will begin to travel. Then the site to look for is when the animal prepares for a deep, feeding dive and "flukes up", raising its tail completely out of the water, propelling the animal down into the depths. The sperm whale is able to make dives in excess of 7,000 feet and may stay down for close to an hour.
