When looking at the map of Dominica, Castaways is located about 1.5 miles north of the mouth of the Layou River, between the small villages of St. Joseph and Mero.

Ideally located, a 25-minute drive down the coast will put you at the Canefield Airport and the capital city of Roseau. It is a one-hour drive through the virgin rainforest to pick you up at Melville Hall airport. Although long, it is a beautiful drive and informative with our hiker, driver Francis Frampton.

Renting a car is the best way to get around Dominica. There are car rental agencies available at the airport although most of the car rental agencies are in Roseau. Visiting drivers must be between ages 25 and 65 and have a valid driver's license and at least two years' driving experience. For a small fee, you can get the required local driver's license from immigration on arrival. Primary roads are well paved and clearly signposted; remember to drive on the left.

Should you like us to organize a car for your arrival we would be happy to assist. Local buses are cheap and run regularly along the coastal routes between Roseau and both Scotts Head and Portsmouth, There are few buses in the evening and none on Sunday on most routes.

Most of Dominica's attractions are along the west coast or in the mountains just inland from the capital, Roseau. AS you can see by the map, Castaways location will make it easier for you to travel around without back traking the same routes.

This is a large island, but the primary roads are well paved and getting around is easy. With a reasonably early start, it's possible to drive up the west coast from Roseau to Portsmouth, explore Cabrits National Park, travel down the east coast through the Carib Territory and stop at the Emerald Pool on your way back across the island, all in a full-day outing.
